getting there
we flew direct from LAX to San José del Cabo (SJD) — about a 2.5 hour flight. short enough that the kids barely had time to ask “are we there yet?” more than 47 times. if you're flying with littles, book the morning flight. they nap on the way down and you land ready for pool time.
tip: the airport is about 30 minutes from most Cabo resorts. we pre-booked a shuttle through our hotel and it was seamless — car seats and all.
where we stayed
we split our trip between two spots:
Montage Los Cabos — this was the dream. the kids' club is unreal (ours didn't want to leave), the pools are stunning, and the rooms are big enough that nobody felt on top of each other. ask for a ground-floor suite if you're traveling with toddlers — direct pool access is a game changer.
Casa Dorada on Médano Beach — more of a chill, walkable vibe. right on the swimmable beach (most Cabo beaches aren't!), and walking distance to tacos and shops. perfect for families who don't want to feel locked into a resort.
eating with kids (the real ones)
let's be honest — this is the part that makes or breaks a family trip.
Flora Farms — yes it lives up to the hype. go for lunch, not dinner. the kids ran around the farm while we actually finished a conversation. the wood-fired pizza is a crowd pleaser and the margaritas are dangerously good.
Tacos Guss — our kids' #1 pick. casual, fast, cheap, and the al pastor is chef's kiss. we went three times. no regrets.
The Office on the Beach — literally tables in the sand. the kids dug holes while we ate ceviche. it's touristy but honestly? with eight kids, we're not above touristy if it means everyone's happy.
Mi Casa — in downtown Cabo. beautiful courtyard, great mole, and they brought chips and salsa fast (parents of toddlers know why this matters).
what we packed (and wished we packed)
- reef-safe sunscreen — required in Cabo and honestly better for the kids anyway
- rash guards with UPF 50 (little eight cabo capsule, obviously)
- a compact stroller that reclines — cobblestone streets are real, but so are mid-day naps
- one nice outfit per kid — Flora Farms and Montage dinners are worth dressing up for
- we forgot: extra zip-lock bags. for wet swimsuits, sandy snacks, mystery shells — just bring the whole box
the honest truth
traveling with eight kids between two families sounds chaotic. and it is. but Cabo made it easy. the weather is perfect, the food is incredible, the people are warm, and the pace is exactly what families need — slow enough to relax, exciting enough that nobody's bored.
would we do it again? we're already planning the next one.
